Recycling News IKEA Takes Stand Against Bag Litter Everyone's favorite Swedish, some-assembly required, furniture retailer is taking a stand against plastic bags & its customers who use them. IKEA U.S. will charge 5 cents apiece for each plastic bag used at the checkout counter starting March 15. All 29 of the U.S. company stores will no longer offer free plastic bags, but will sell a large, reusable plastic bag for a reduced price of .59 cents. Customers can bring back the "Big Blue" bag & reuse it for free. "This program reaches out to everyone & embraces the idea that together we can do a lot," said Pernille Spiers-Lopez, president of IKEA North America. The company expects to reduce the number of plastic bags its U.S. customers use at least by 50%, from 70 million to 35 million, in the first year, she said. Each nickel the company collects, up to $1.75 million over the next 12-month period, will go to American Forests, a nonprofit conservation organization that plants trees to restore forests & offset carbon dioxide emissions. Joshua Houdek & his fiancee, Kristi Papenfuss, are planning a zero-waste wedding in August, complete with compostable food service ware. "Everything that we will be using for our big day will be either reusuable, compostable or recyclable," Houdek said. The farm where the wedding will take place, Gale Wood Farm, will compost the biodegradable items, and pigs will take care of the food scraps, avoiding the need to truck the material to a facility. The couple also are giving their guests the option of offsetting the impact of their travel by purchasing carbon credits from companies such as TerraPass Inc. of Menlo Park, CA. & NativeEnergy LLC of Charlotte, VT. In a final expression of their long-term commitment not only to each other but also to the environment, the couple's wedding rings will be made from recycled gold by Green Carat LC, based in Magnolia, TX. Increased interest in environmentally responsible weddings has spawned paperless invitation Web sites, such as Ourweddingwebsites.com., and even a new online publication, Portovert Magazine. "Weddings are such a high-consumption event and consumer-driven event," said Meghan Meyers, editorial director for Portovert Magazine.
